Monks in their mandarin-colored robes have become Monks in their mandarin-colored robes have become a symbol of the UNESCO world heritage city of Luang Prabang, Laos. You can see them throughout the day in any of the 33+ temples or just running errands on the town's streets. There's also an alms giving ceremony called Tak Bat that happens before dawn every morning. The ritual is a chance for locals to donate food as a symbol of their respect and support of the Buddhist religion. I have always very curious about monks and have enjoyed the interactions I've had with them throughout my journey.

To stay and watch the young monks at work in the temple was both an honor and an awe-inspiring moment. One of the first stops on my long-term journey, Luang Prabang was a magical place that I will never forget.

🌺 They say that the flower that blooms in adver 🌺 They say that the flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.🌺

2020 certainly provided a whole slew of adversity for just about everyone in the world. I definitely went experienced a roller coaster of different emotions.

2020 showed me a thing or two. It proved to me that we don't understand everything that happens to us, especially in the moment. It took away much of the control I have over making daily decisions in my life; since freedom is my most valued possession, this was especially difficult for me. I had to learn to let go, to sit still again, to give up the reigns.

It kicked me back into the kitchen where I learned to find a whole new level of joy, interacting with food in ways I've never been able to before. It allowed me to mentally shape my future and to actually visualize what I want it that look like. It even gave me the gift of creating - on top of spending more time with my photography work, I made my first batch of home brewed kombucha and my first bars of handmade soap (pictured here, made in silicone cupcake molds).

It feels so good to create things with my hands, especially since these two things had been on my "to-do" list for so long I can't even remember when I added them. And through this avenue of creativity, 2020 also gave me the gift of amazing friendships - both new and old! It connected me to new friends with common interests and allowed me more time to connect with my family and friends in virtual ways that finally felt more natural.

Essentially, 2020 gave me room and space for things that mattered, things that made me feel whole, and things I didn't even know I needed. I don't know if we can call that "blooming," but it is at least planting a beautiful seed.

I wish you all an amazing 2021 and hope that you made it through 2020 with at least some small bits of joy or silver linings. I'd love it if you're inspired to share your "bloom" in the comments to kick off 2021 with a little inspiration for others. HUGS!

*Special thanks to @pedalin_india for the lovely photo and for being my soap making partner/mentor (I still can't believe I FINALLY made soap)! Can't wait to do it again!*

From the orange desert to the blue city, and the colorful pottery, leather and tile-work in between! All the good things you see and hear about the “Blue City” of Chefchaouen are true; I was kind of obsessed with every single door and alleyway in the medina - it’s like a photographer’s dream.

The city was founded in 1471 by Sultan Mulay Alí Ben Rachid. It didn’t get its famous color until 1492, when many Jewish people trying to escape the Spanish inquisition immigrated there and brought with them a tradition of painting buildings blue...at least this is one of the legends.

This morning I woke up to a stomach full of knots This morning I woke up to a stomach full of knots and anxiety. It was the kind of feeling that can keep you in bed the whole day. I've had some worrisome news coming from home, the beginning of restrictions in Turkey where all restaurants and coffee shops are closed, the weather starting to get cold, some unexplained.lower back pain that kept me awake most of the night...

Before I even knew what was happening, a major self care routine kicked in. I took a long, hot shower, did a mini-pedicure, hair + face mask, self-massage and stretching for the lower back pain. Then I got dressed, flat ironed my hair, put on make up and went out for a 1.5 hour walk  along the water. Got my favorite matcha latte to-go and scratched a lot of kitty heads along the way.

Suddenly I realized that I subconsciously saw these negative emotions coming and squashed them...without even thinking about it. It was a proud moment to realize that I am self programmed to take care of myself when I need it most.

Has this kind of thing ever happened to you? What is your routine when you're battling negative energy in your life?

“Travel changes you. As you move through this li “Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.” ―Anthony Bourdain
.
Morocco: one of the most beautiful and intriguing places I've ever visited -- also the one that has pushed me the farthest outside of my comfort zone. The culture is just so different than the one I grew up with, I often found myself struggling to get it right. My photography work from my time there is by far my favorite, perhaps a bandaid for the "marks" that Bourdain talks about in one of my favorite travel quotes.
.
I didn't know when I set out just how much exploring and really getting to know the world would change me. I had no idea how both beautiful and painful those marks could be. I now know that I thrive on learning the little details about other parts of the world. I love being pushed out of my comfort zone on a regular basis! I wouldn't want to live my life any other way.
.
This time through the pandemic has left us with a lot of time to think, especially about life's basics and what we value most. I wonder, is there something that you've always wanted to do but you've been too afraid of failure (or maybe you're afraid of success)? Do you believe that life is truly lived if we spend too much time in our comfort zones?

George Town is one of those places that is full of unexpected surprises. It's vintage mixed with modern. You'll find old Chinese shop houses still in their original states alongside unique modern street art. It's a melting pot of cultures - Chinese, Indian and Malay, which also makes for a fabulous food scene. I spent half a year on Penang Island and it will always have a special place in my heart ❤️
Summer in this part of the world is finally coming Summer in this part of the world is finally coming to an end and fall weather is kicking in. I savored every last second of the warm weather while exploring the Mediterranean coast of Turkey and now I'm loving the crisp humidity-free windy air that represents the new season.

As much as I love summer, autumn has always been a time of big changes for me - I'm wondering what this year will bring? What are your favorite seasons and why do you love them so much?

Have you heard the saying, "You can have it all, j Have you heard the saying, "You can have it all, just not all at once."?

This runs through my mind a lot - when I get impatient with where I am vs. where I want to be. Or when I remember periods of time that were so meaningful, and even though my current life is great, I long to be back in those special moments again.

Maybe it was childhood, or an amazing group of friends, university life, a fabulous vacation, spending time with family that's passed away, having young kids, or thinking that you found your soul mate - these are all things that happen over decades. No matter how hard that nostalgia persists, we can never go back to that exact time or place. It's important to recognize the greatness that is in our lives at the moment so that we don't miss the chance to savor it.

So today, remember all of the great times and accomplishments of the past, recognize the current beauty around you, and plan what you'd like to achieve with the remainder of your decades. They say that life is short, but for most of us, it just depends on how you look at it - as long as you're still alive, you still have time. #itsnottoolate #itsnevertoolate

Can you believe that all this beauty behind me is Can you believe that all this beauty behind me is technically just one big, giant SETBACK?

I never thought I'd still be in Turkey. I had plans to be elsewhere; but the universe (and the pandemic) had other ideas for me. Now I've repositioned my mindset and focused on what I CAN DO, instead of what I can't. Having the opportunity to slowly move around the gorgeous Mediterranean coast, without the pressure of "where to next?' feels very serendipitous.

So often, when we feel that something is going wrong, that's when we are just being steered down a different path. There's a higher power telling us to take a detour. It can be so hard to recognize this guidance in the moments when our emotions are running high because we define these moments as setbacks. And setbacks register in our minds as failures or rejection, but they are really just hidden opportunities and redirection.

I can think back to many times in my life where it seemed like something really terrible was happening, but months, or even years later, I eventually understand why. I finally see that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be and how much better that place is.

We've all had these redirected 'ah-ha' moments in our lives, I'd love for you to share one of your most meaningful ones in the comments 🙏💪♥️

I don't know about you, but going through a pandem I don't know about you, but going through a pandemic and being stuck in an apartment for a few months really made me think a lot about the things I'd like to be doing. So I wanted to share with you a method that has been helpful for me in turning my thoughts/goals things into reality. I challenge you to pick up a pen and write this down .

🧿 First, figure out one (or two) thing(s) that you want to be doing more of.

🧿 If we make things easy for ourselves, we are a lot more likely to do them. Jot down a few methods that would make it easier for you to do the thing you want to be doing. Give yourself something that reminds you visually every day - like post-it notes. For example if I want to take more photos, I can leave my camera packed in my backpack by the door so that it's so easy to just take it with me on the way out.

🧿 You know you best! Ask yourself what your pitfalls are. These are things like retreating to comfort zones, being overwhelmed by large amounts of data/projects all at once, fear of failure, etc. Make a note of a few of them.

🧿 What is your natural reaction to your pitfalls? What do you do when you feel those things? For example, procrastination is one that often happens for me when I'm overwhelmed.

🧿 Next, write down how you can overcome the pitfalls and change your natural reaction? Some things that work for me are breaking large things down into smaller pieces, or attempting to make the new activity part of my daily routine by tying it into other things I already do. I love my morning coffee and rarely skip it so I can write or edit photos while I'm sitting with my cup.

🧿 How can you establish consistency? They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so with a few days off in between, if you can practice these key items for a whole month, you should be on the right track for making them part of your regular daily routine. Refer back to your notebook or journal if you feel yourself slipping too far away from the goal.

What's one thing you'd like to be doing more of??
